Citing Email Messages

based on the MLA Handbook, 8th edition

Locate the following information about the personal communication:

  • Name of the sender
  • Title of the message -- use the subject as the title
  • Name of the receiver
  • Date of the message

Structure of Citation:

Sender(s). “Title of the Message from Subject Line.” Receiver(s), Date.

Examples:

Obama, Barak. "A Question about Politics." Received by Donald J. Trump, 18 Sept. 2016.

Trump, Donald J. "Re: A Question about Politics." Received by Barak Obama, 20 Sept. 2016.

 

Citing Tweets

based on the MLA Handbook, 8th edition

Locate the following information about the personal communication:

  • Name of the tweeter
  • Title - identify a short untitled message like a tweet by using it's full-text, without changes, in place of a title
  • Title of site
  • Publication date 
  • Location

Structure of Citation:

Tweeter. “Fulltext of the Tweet.” Site, Date, Location.

Examples:

@KensingtonRoyal. "The Duke: 'I am Honoured to be Patron of the Thin Red Line Appeal' @ArgyllsMuseum." Twitter, 24 Oct. 2016, http://twitter.com/kensingtonroyal/status/790516722436542464.

NOTE:  ignore special characters when alphabetizing entries in your "Works Cited" list. @KensingtonRoyal would be alphabetized under K for Kensington.
